As mentioned on this blog before, Debbie and I met on a half-blind dinner date 26 years ago at the White Swan gastropub in Llanfrynach, just outside of Brecon in Wales. I say half-blind as I’d seen what she looked like on a videotape that mutual friend Rose showed me in her home in Wales!
I was visiting Quaker’s Yard to catch up with Rose’s husband Paul who was in the same 29 Security Company based in Brecon I had been posted to in Int & Sy Gp (V) – after leaving 21 Intelligence Company where I’d trained to be a photographic interpreter at JSPI in RAF Wyton.
Paul had told me what I needed was the love of a good Welsh woman after my recent divorce, little did I know what was to transpire!
I remember driving all four of us in my bright red Ford Sierra GLS to the village after picking up Debs in her Mount Pleasant home. We were listening to Gene Kelly “singing in the rain” on cassette (quite apt for Wales) and I was thinking what a catch she was in the passenger seat next to me and how grateful I was to Rose & Paul in the rear for making the introduction.
Debbie and I have had two holidays in Llanfrynach since, but the best was in March this year when I took a week off from work to celebrate our silver wedding there right back where it all started. The White Swan even opened up specially for us on our anniversary night!
