Jean Whitear WAAF 1945 War Diary

This was one of the very first diaries Debbie & I transcribed together after finishing Uncle Reginald’s WWI diaries and it concerns a Women’s Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF) Aircraftwoman (ACW) Jean Whitear serving with 149 Squadron in Norfolk.

Jean’s day by day exploits as a 24 year old single woman in the last year of the Second World War on Lancaster bomber bases at RAF Feltwell and Methwold stations are detailed in this diary.

Lots of going to the pictures & shows, visiting relatives on 36 hour passes, cycling, drinking in pubs, dancing and generally enjoying life.

One item of great sadness is recorded on the 5th June 1945, just after VE day, namely the loss of a Lancaster bomber piloted by F/O Peter Tottle on a return journey repatriating former POWs from liberated France.

Coincidentally in another transcribed diary of Flight Sergeant Dennis Wright, also of 149 Squadron, he also mentions flying with this officer in 1945 shortly before he was killed.

Despite this tragedy Jean flies twice with her “boys” on short trips afterwards before celebrating VJ day and finally seeing 1945 out.

“Domestic day, polishing etc,” will always raise a smile in my memory of Jean and it took Debbie and I ages to decipher what she meant!

    1. Hi Anthony great news you found this blog and the transcribed diary. My wife and I visited Feltwell about 3 years ago and retraced all the pubs she frequented! As you are her nephew Debbie and I would be delighted to reunite you with the original diary if you send me your address details to Peter.shores@me.com if you have any photos of Jean you could scan we’d be so interested as we really enjoyed deciphering her writing over many evenings!
