January 1944

 Saturday 1st

Today I was spending my five days New Year’s leave with Mrs R. Turner in Toronto. Yesterday my first Canadian girl-friend gave me the brush off when she refused a bracelet I had bought her for Christmas. However I left the same with her. I had a pretty dull time today going to a couple of shows. I phoned her today when she told me all the gen about another fellow in the air force who had returned.

Sunday 2nd

Had a splendid turkey dinner at Mrs Turner’s. The rest of the day passed quite uneventfully.

Monday 3rd

Little worth recording happened today. I went into town (Toronto I presume – DW Sept 1944) writing a stupid little letter to the little woman.

Tuesday 4th

Returned to camp today very cheesed after a boring leave.

Wednesday 5th

I, with another RAF fellow, being the only RAF boys left in the pool did very little work as usual today.  Bracelet received today with letter of apology etc. from Toronto.

Thursday 6th

Managed to scrounge a 48 for this weekend. Card decided the “pool” needed one.

Friday 7th

We were put in the drill hall today to sweep it. Card having no money to go on a 48 himself refused to issue 48’s until 5 o’clock. Caught the 6.35 staying at YMCA Jarvis Street.

Saturday 8th

I had but one meal today. Went to a show in Toronto. I went to see Mrs Browning this evening with her two daughters and niece!

Sunday 9th

Getting up rather late today I had a chicken dinner. I went to the YMCA in the afternoon and had a wizard swim. I played table-tennis for the remaining time of the afternoon. I caught the 6.05 back to Dunnville.

Monday 10th

Card successfully put us to work in the drill hall sweeping same. Very cold.

Tuesday 11th

Nothing worth recording occurred today.  Stott & Higgins returned from New York.

Wednesday 12th

Visited Mrs Root in the evening. Throughout the week consistent rumours of impending postings before the end of the month have been circulating.

Thursday 13th

Arising at 10.30 (unusual, usually 11.30) Heeley informed us we were to report to drill hall for work. Card had been giving us a line as usual. Managed to extract a 48 from Card again.

Friday 14th

After doing nothing in the morning we left (Ken and I) early in the afternoon to Toronto. Had a lift to St Catharines then on to Toronto. Bunking at the YMCA went to the Palais Royale dance.

Saturday 15th

Arising about 10 proceeded to active service canteen in the morning. Swam in the YMCA in the afternoon. Went to the Royal York dance in the evening having first seen Betty Grable etc. in Springtime in the Rockies again. Saw it before a long while back in England.

Sunday 16th

Today was rather cheesing having little to do. Ken and I set out for Dunnville by bus. Arrived in Hamilton at 4 spending 7 hours in the same until bus at 11.15. Visited Centenary church where band of No. 1 Training Command played.

Monday 17th

Rudely awaked at 08.30 hrs by Sergeant Card we rushed off to Signals. Were informed in the afternoon that kitchen was our destination.   Afterthoughts Boy how I hate Card and the RCAF and wish I were on course (see note Tuesday 14th November).

2 RCAF guys killed in a crack-up at noon today.

Tuesday 18th

Had a lift to Dunnville turned back to catch train. Arrived Buffalo 9.15 attempted to hitch up to Rochester N.Y. Turned back after walking 6 miles. Arrived Rochester 4.00am slept in Hotel Claridge.

Saturday 22nd

Arising at 11.00 proceeded straight to U.S.O. obtained bed etc. Went into town had lunch proceeded to look over talent in Rochester. Went to two shows at reduce rate. Afterthoughts. Either the women of Rochester have been warned by previous RAF – or we were too slow – we had no luck.

Sunday 23rd

Spent a poor night in Rochester U.S.O. Had breakfast left Rochester by 2.20 hrs. Arrived Buffalo 5.35 rushed straight to station to catch train 6.00pm. Arrived Dunnville 8.30 had first meal of day. Afterthoughts This was a poor 48 – take a dim view of hospitality in New York State.

Monday 24th

Rumours of postings confirmed! 13 to go me included (so far) managed to swap with Russel who declined to go. Afterthoughts. Boy am I glad to get out of Dunnville after exactly 3 months since I washed out!

Sunday 30th

Arising around 11.00 hrs I ate a late breakfast and caught the 13.35 train from Toronto. Arrived in London 17.00 and at 4 A.O.S. at 18.00. Afterthoughts. Looks ok at first sight however we have yet to experience bullshit etc.
