The more observant of you dear readers will remember that last year I went to my 30 year reunion of Squad 29, that motley collection of aspiring Intelligence Corps soldiers undergoing basic training and “passing out” at Corps HQ then situated in Templar barracks in Ashford, Kent.
Being a marriage of “equals” SWMBO (Rumpole aficionados will understand what I mean) informed me that she wanted to attend her reunion of fellow Merthyr Vale infant and junior school pupils organised via Facebook on Saturday 29th April 2017!
The location chosen for this get together was the Merthyr Vale ex-serviceman’s club otherwise known as “the Daggers” as can be seen in the photograph below.
Now when we first learnt of this get together which was organised in the main by David Tovey, Sid (Allan) Griffiths & Alan Williams, we tried to find a local hotel or bed & breakfast but we drew a blank despite repeated searches on the internet. Apparently this area is really popular at the weekends for mountain cyclists and everything gets booked up well in advance, so when our good friends Linda & Terry offered to put us up in Aberfan we jumped at the chance!
The Daggers has a brilliant pricing policy for beer and wine that made the night affordable for everyone and Alan William’s “cunning plan” to organise a Karaoke set up from Abercanaid went down a treat. So much so that I volunteered to be first up singing “No More Heroes” by the Stranglers!
But the main raison d’être of the evening was for Debs to rekindle her friendships with the following…
Now, to put it mildly a lot of drink flowed (as they say) and it was a miracle, ably “supported” by Linda & Terry that we made it safely back to their house…
I’m looking forward to the next reunion next year – I think!
